There isn't one best AI visibility tool for every local business. There are four good ones, built around different jobs: BrightLocal around listings and reviews, Local Falcon around map rankings, Semrush around SEO research, and Speak Local around finding out why AI answers leave you out and what to fix. We make Speak Local, so everything here about the other three comes from their own pricing and feature pages, read on October 1, 2026 — and we've tried to be as plain about our gaps as theirs.
What should an AI visibility tool do for a local business?
Four things matter more than the length of the feature list:
- Ask the assistants your customers use, the way they ask. "Who's a good roofer near me?" gets a different answer from a question about your brand, and it draws on different sources. How ChatGPT picks local businesses explains why.
- Show you the answers, not just a score. You need to see who was named instead of you, and which sites the answer drew on.
- Check more than once. AI answers vary from run to run, so a single check proves little. Look for history over weeks.
- Point you at a fix. A tool that only reports that you're missing leaves the hard part to you.
The four tools at a glance
| Tool | Built around | AI answers it tracks | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| BrightLocal | Listings, citations, reviews and local rank tracking | ChatGPT and Google's AI | $41 a month for one location |
| Local Falcon | Map rank tracking on a geo-grid | Eight platforms, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode | $24.99 a month for 7,500 credits |
| Semrush | SEO research and competitor data | ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity | $99 a month per domain |
| Speak Local | A site audit, a fix list and AI answer tracking | ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, asked directly; AI Overviews from your tracked Google searches | $49 a month |
BrightLocal: best if your listings and reviews need the work
BrightLocal has been a local SEO tool for more than 15 years, and its entry Track plan shows the breadth: local rank tracking for up to 100 keywords and four competitors, citation monitoring, a Google Business Profile audit, and a geo-grid map for up to five keywords. Its Local AI Visibility Tracker, on every plan, shows how your business appears in ChatGPT and Google's AI. The Manage plan adds listing sync, Grow adds review management, and a pay-as-you-go Citation Builder starts at $2 a citation.
Where it falls short for this job: its AI tracking covers ChatGPT and Google, not Perplexity. And it's priced per location: Track is $41 a month for one location billed monthly, or $31 a month billed annually, and the price rises with the number of locations.
Local Falcon: best for seeing where you rank across your service area
Local Falcon is built on geo-grid scans: the same search, run from a lattice of points around your business, showing where you rank at each one on Google and Apple Maps. For a business people find by proximity that matters, because a map ranking changes street by street. Its AI tracking is the broadest of the four — eight platforms, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Copilot, and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, refreshed daily. Plans are credit packs from $24.99 a month billed monthly for 7,500 credits, where one credit is one map point and a 5×5 grid uses 25.
Where it falls short for this job: its own description centers on map rankings, AI visibility and automating your Business Profile. If the reason assistants skip you sits on your website — a firewall that blocks AI crawlers, missing schema, an address that disagrees from page to page — pair it with a site audit. Credits on a monthly pack also expire at the end of each month.
Semrush: best if you also need SEO research at scale
Semrush is the broadest SEO suite here: keyword research, competitor analysis, site audits and rank tracking across many sites. AI visibility comes two ways. The AI Visibility toolkit is $99 a month per domain and tracks 25 custom prompts daily across ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity. The combined SEO + AI Search plans start at $139 a month, and the $199 Starter plan tracks 50 prompts daily.
Where it falls short for this job: it's built for marketers who will use the research tools. For one location that mainly wants to know whether assistants name it, much of the suite may go unused — and AI tracking and local listing work are sold as separate toolkits, the Local one from $30 a month per location.
Speak Local: best for finding out why AI leaves you out
Speak Local starts from your website. Its scan checks what GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot get back from your site, scores up to 32 checks across Local, SEO, AEO and GEO, and ranks the fixes by how many points each one gives back. Then it asks ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the questions your customers ask, with web search on, and keeps every answer — so you can see who was named instead of you and which sites the answer cited. Keyword positions are checked daily, including whether Google showed an AI Overview and whether it cited you. A map rank grid, Google reviews, and analytics with heatmaps and session recordings are on every plan. Plans start at $49 a month, and the free scan needs no account.
Where it falls short for this job: it asks three assistants, not Grok, Copilot or Apple Intelligence, and it reads AI Overviews from your tracked Google searches rather than prompting AI Mode. Questions run on a weekly or monthly round, not daily, and on the $49 plan the month's credits cover about two questions tracked weekly or about 10 keywords checked daily, from one shared pool. Its map grid tops out at 7×7. It doesn't build citations, sync listings or reply to reviews. And it's the newest of the four.
How do you choose?
- Customers find you on the map: start with geo-grid tracking. Local Falcon is built for it; BrightLocal and Speak Local include a grid too.
- Your listings disagree or your reviews are thin: BrightLocal's listing and review tools go straight at that.
- You also need keyword research and competitor SEO data: Semrush.
- Assistants don't mention you and you don't know why: start with your site — crawler access, schema, and one consistent name, address and phone come before anything else. That's what Speak Local's scan checks.
Whichever you pick, track the same handful of questions for several weeks before you judge the result. One check is a sample, not a verdict.
Do you need a tool at all?
Not to start. For one location you can run the check by hand: once a month, ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini your three most valuable customer questions, and note who's named and which sites are cited. Our 30-minute DIY audit walks through it. A tool earns its fee when you want that done on a schedule, with history, across more questions than you'll ask by hand — and with the reason you were left out.
